The Least of These…
Well, hello once again friends and fellow readers. I’m back and so happy and excited to share another nugget with you. The other day in conversation the question was raised: When you read the passage of scripture that says, “Whatsoever you’ve done for the least of these, my brothers and sisters, you’ve done it as unto me.” (Matthew 25:40)
Wow! You know, that is kind of a loaded question. In all honesty as I thought about it, we often equate that verse with caring for the homeless and those down on their luck. That may be true, but is that really what that’s saying? In studying the Bible we’re often reminded that in order to understand a verse or passage of scripture, we have to know the context. What does that mean? It means reading what comes before, around, and after that verse. Who’s speaking, what’s the timeframe or culture at the time, who is the audience.
As we discussed that verse 40, it became very important to think about who the least of them was talking about, and then unto me. Who is me? As we discussed that scripture and gave our thoughts on it, the more I thought to myself, maybe I’ve been looking at this through filtered lenses. Who are these?
Yes, the Bible tells us to take care of the marginalized, the poor, and the needy, but as I looked back and around, I realized that “the least of these” here were not those. Here the word was making reference to those who carried the word of God. Those who speak to and minister through the word of God. Do we receive them with respect as ministers and representatives of God? Do we provide for them?
As we come to Matthew 10:42, the chapter ends with these words: “And if anyone gives even a cold cup of water to one of these little ones who are my disciples, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”
There are certainly many interpretations of this verse, but we must pray to God, and study to gain an understanding. Of one thing we can be sure, if we love everyone and serve, we cannot go too wrong. Jesus’ example was one of servanthood. That should be our thought. To serve those who represent Him, and to serve those who are in need; spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Telling someone about the road to eternity is servanthood—“to the least of these.” Loving them as we love Christ. We’ll again later, but in the meantime I wish you much love, joy, peace, and blessings. ~Barbara G
“One of the principle rules of religion is, to lose no opportunity of serving God. And since He is invisible to our eyes, we are to serve Him in our neighbour; which He receives as of some to Himself in person, standing visibly before us.”
